  • 20-Minute Mentor: Help students prepare for class

Every Monday, Magna Publications provides UConn faculty members with access to a 20-minute video from its “Monday Morning Mentor” presentation series.  This series offers video-based programs designed to answer a specific question related to teaching and learning, delivering actionable insights in highly focused 20-minute presentations designed to fit busy schedules.

This week’s program, “How do I get students to come to class prepared?” can be accessed at http://www.mondaymorningmentors.com; use the following password:   class8

Unprepared students might seem to be a standard ingredient of higher education, but it doesn’t have to be that way. This program shows you what you can do to create the kind of courses that naturally encourage student preparation and eliminate some of the common frustrations of higher education. When you are finished with this program, you will know how to

    • Design courses using an interactive teaching model that has students encounter course material before working with it in class
    • Write class preparation assignments that guide students through reading assignments and then inform and stimulate class discussion
    • Design an interactive course that gives students space and time to express their voices, demonstrate their preparation, and exercise their intellectual abilities

The video will be available from Monday, February 8 through Sunday, February 14, 2016.
