    A Conversation with Dr. Gene Likens

    As part of its Building Excellence through Planning speaker series, University Planning is pleased to present “A Conversation with Dr. Gene Likens,” Founding Director and President Emeritus of the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies, Distinguished Professor, and Special Advisor to the President on Environmental Affairs here at UConn.

    Dr. Likens’ is an ecologist best known for his discovery of acid rain in North America with colleagues. His research focuses on the ecology and biogeochemistry of forest and aquatic ecosystems at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest and he is co-founder of the internationally renowned Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study.  In addition to UConn, he currently holds faculty positions at Yale, Cornell, Rutgers, and SUNY Albany, and was awarded a Chair as Albert Einstein Professor from the Chinese Academy of Science and also named Honorary Professor at Jinan University, Guangzhou, China.

    Dr. Likens was awarded the 2001 National Medal of Science, the nation’s highest science honor for his contributions to the field of ecology by President George W. Bush.  He is also the author, co-author or editor of 24 books and more than 600 scientific papers. 

    Dr. Likens will be joined by Dr. Gregory Anderson, Emeritus and Distinguished Professor in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at UConn.  Dr. Anderson has extensive, international experience spanning five decades and is the recipient of 18 prestigious awards and honors. He has served as President and Board member of most of the leading scientific societies and federations dedicated to the advancement of research and education in his field.  Dr. Anderson also serves as co-chair and founding member of the Arboretum Committee at UConn.  In retirement, he continues to have an active research program as well as contributing to service and teaching at the University.

    Dr. Likens and Dr. Anderson will discuss the discovery of acid rain in the North America and its regional and local impacts on our trees and forests. They will also describe in detail the studies that have been conducted on improving the health of one of New England’s most iconic trees – the sugar maple – and the application of those findings on our campus arboretum. Dr. Likens will also speak about his role advising on various environmental affairs at UConn.
