  • 10/15 Materials Expert Gives Two Talks on Physics

The physics department is proud to host materials theorist Dr. Avadh Saxena from Los Alamos National Laboratory for two talks this week.

The first talk by Dr. Saxena will describe experimental and theoretical progress on novel states of magnetism in a condensed matter physics seminar held at 2PM on Thursday, October 15 in IMS-20 (Gant complex) entitled "Skyrmions, Merons and Monopoles: Topological Excitations in Chiral Magnets".

Then, on Friday, October 16 at 4PM in P-38 (Gant complex), Dr. Saxena will give a more general physics colloquium entitled "Nonlinear Dirac Solitons and Their Stability: Field Theory to Dirac Materials". Refreshments will be served at 3:30 in the physics reading room.

Brief bio: Avadh Saxena is Group Leader of the Condensed Matter and Complex Systems group (T-4) at Los Alamos National Lab, New Mexico, where he has been been since 1990. He is also an affiliate of the Center for Nonlinear Studies at Los Alamos. His main research interests include phase transitions, optical, electronic, vibrational, transport and magnetic properties of functional materials, device physics, soft condensed matter and nonlinear phenomena. He holds adjunct professor positions at the University of Barcelona, Spain and the University of Arizona, Tucson. He is Scientific Advisor to National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS), Tsukuba, Japan. He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society, and a member of the Sigma Xi Scientific Research Society, Materials Research Society and TMS. Contact him at: avadh@lanl.gov
