Abstract: Billions of people survive – if you can call it that – on under $2/day. Their lives are grim, unhealthy and short. Conversely, many of us spend more than that each day on specialty coffees, music downloads or other frills. Isn’t the indicated conclusion that we citizens of rich countries are obliged as a matter of justice to transfer substantial funds to the world’s poor nations? Surprisingly, the answer is No. However, we are conspicuously failing to fulfill other duties owed to the global poor. This talk will investigate how the world’s worst-off people are being systematically mistreated, who the prime culprits are, and what might be done about it.
