  • 10/9 ARE Department Seminar: Dr. Michael Long

Dr. Michael Long, George Washington University

Seminar Title: "Evaluating the Cost-Effectiveness of Obesity Prevention Policies: Sugar-Sweetened Beverage Tax Case Study"

    Abstract:

Despite recent flattening in childhood obesity trends, obesity prevalence in the United States remains at an all-time high. Reversing the epidemic will require sustained effort from policymakers and civil society. Although decades of research has been done to identify the causes of obesity and potential interventions, very little attention has been paid to how much interventions cost or to the relative value of strategies competing for limited public health budgets and political capital needed to enact new policies. Dr. Long will present results from his recently published analysis of the cost-effectiveness of a sugar-sweetened beverage excise tax in the United States. The presentation will review methods for developing cost-effectiveness models and for estimating potential impacts of food tax policy changes.
