The UConn Co-Op Bookstore at Storrs Center is hosting Writer/Director Dennis Liu, who will present on his latest project, the comic book RAISING DION on Friday, October 2 from 6PM to 7:45PM at their Royce Circle location.
Dennis Liu (DGA) graduated from The Taft School and NYU with a major in film. He began his career assisting producers at advertising agencies such as BBDO and Saatchi & Saatchi. His breakout piece, "Apple Mac Music Video," quickly raked in a million hits on YouTube in a matter of days, landing him a spot on the @radical.media director roster when he was 23. In 2008, he won The People’s Choice Award in the Cannes New Director’s Showcase. He’s received nods from the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, SHOOT, ‘boards, creativity-online.com, AICP (MOMA), Adcolor, Pixar, and The One Show. His "YouTube Mosaic Music Video," has been shown at the Guggenheim Museum.
RAISING DION released in August 2015 as both a comic book and cinematic film trailer - and received rave reviews from the TODAY Show, The Washington Post, Fast Company, Comic Book Resources, The Guardian UK, among others. Written by Liu and illustrated by Jason Piperberg, the title character is a 7 year old who has superpowers, and the story follows his mom Nicole’s efforts to keep track of her son’s invisibility, plasma powers, and telekinesis – at the same time, making sure that she keeps him safe from the mysterious men who seem to be tailing them. As Liu describes on his website, “imagine Superman, but from Martha Kent's point of view. Or imagine Spiderman, but from Aunt May's point of view. This is a superhero story, but from the parent's point of view. But unlike her son, she doesn't have any powers.”
