Research, Funding, and Awards

  • First in the World (FITW) Program

The Office of the Vice President for Research would like to announce the U.S. Department of Education, First in the World (FITW) Program.

The First in the World (FITW) Program will provide grants to institutions of higher education to spur the development of innovations that improve educational outcomes and make college more affordable for students and families, and to develop an evidence base of effective practices. Institutions of higher education or consortia of such institutions are eligible applicants for FITW grants. We encourage applicants to partner with public and private institutions and agencies that can assist the applicant to achieve the goals of the project.

Estimated range of awards is $1,000,000 to $3,000,000 for 48 months. Dept. of Education will make 6 to 8 awards, but will not fund any application that proposes a budget exceeding $3,000,000 for a single budget period of 48 months.  Total available funds for the FITW program is $60,000,000, but the Dept. of Education will set aside $16,000,000 for Minority-Serving Institutions.  The Dept. of Education requires no cost sharing or matching under this program.

    Limited Submission

Because only one application per institution can be submitted for this program, an internal screening process is required.  If you are considering submitting an application for the program, an on-line Notification of Intent to Submit must be completed by the requested Intent to Submit Deadline.

When submitting pre-proposals for the internal screening process, be sure to check the Guidelines for updates. Pre-proposals not adhering to these guidelines and instructions will be returned.
