We Will Not Forget, Will You? (Holocaust Speakers)

First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Socialist.

Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

    Martin Niemöller

We have seen how the words of a few can inflame the passion of the many in the past few months, but what about the words we use on a daily basis. The jokes we make and the things we say add to a culture of microagressions, unintentional but ever-constant discrimination. What happens when microaggressions take the form and symbols of outward hate? Who will speak out? Who remembers what can happen?

On April 2, 2015 from 6:00PM-8:00PM, join the brothers of Sigma Phi Epsilon, UConn Hillel, the brothers of Alpha Epsilon Pi, the Shipley RA Staff, the RAs for Social Justice, members of the UConn Judaic Studies department, and members of the UConn Pan-Asia Council in remembering the way in which words can turn to action and action can change the world. Join us in remembering the Holocaust through the stories and words of Anita Schorr and Agnes Vertes from the Holocaust Child Survivors of Connecticut organization. We will listen, ask questions, and remember the history so we can challenge ourselves to make a different future. This is a free event and will be held in Phillip B Austin, room 108. If you have questions please contact RA and SigEp’s VP of Member Development, Jacob A Griffith Gardner at Jacob.gardner@uconn.edu

This event counts towards Sophomore Honors. We look forward to seeing you there.
