  • Migrant Farmworkers Clinic Summer Fellowship

El Instituto: Institute of Latina/o, Caribbean, and Latin American Studies Migrant Farm Worker Clinic Summer Intern Fellowship supports the summer work and research of UConn undergraduates with the UConn Migrant Farm Worker Clinic.

Connecticut hosts over 17,000 migrant farm workers annually. This population is part of the poorest group in the United States with the highest rate of occupational injury and illness with little or no access to health care. This invisible population provides an invaluable service to the economy and yet goes without health coverage, Medicaid and Social Security, and often is unaware of their Worker's Compensation benefits. To address this issue, the University of Connecticut School of Medicine and Connecticut Area Health Education Program (CT AHEC) developed the UConn Migrant Farm Worker Clinics which provide free primary health care, health education, and increased access to quality, community-based, primary health care services to migrant and seasonal farm worker populations in Connecticut. The Clinic is supported by students who are trained to assist patients and then volunteer in evening blocks, Monday through Thursday. El Instituto Farm Worker Fellows will assist with primary care screenings and health education outreach among migrant farm workers. In addition, fellows will assist in the training and coordination of temporary volunteers. In the academic year following their fellowship, fellows will contribute a related article to the Instituto newsletter. Students who have an interest in research or careers working with migrant or immigration populations will be given preference. To apply please send a one page statement to anne.gebelein@uconn.edu indicating how work with the Clinic would help further the applicant's academic and/or professional goals. Deadline is Monday February 23rd, 2015.

This fellowship has been established by funds from the UConn Honors Program endowment and El Instituto.
