  • Search for Director - UConn Human Rights Institute

The UConn Human Rights Institute (HRI) encourages engaged discussion and academic research on the advantages and limitations of human rights discourse and practice, with research programs that demonstrate a strong commitment to bridging disciplinary boundaries. The HRI is organized around joint faculty appointments in partnership with the departments of Anthropology, Economics, History, Philosophy, Political Science, Sociology in CLAS, and the Schools of Law and Business. The HRI has a robust undergraduate major and minor in human rights, offers a Graduate Certificate in Human Rights, and sponsors three thematic research clusters focusing on health and human rights, humanitarianism and economic and social rights.

The Director provides both vision and leadership for the continued development and operation of the HRI, advances human rights teaching across all UConn colleges and schools, and pursues novel and critical approaches to human rights scholarship and pedagogy. The Director will continue to expand and enhance the mission of the Institute to educate well-rounded scholars with an informed understanding of human rights, promote interdisciplinary scholarship and provide experiential learning for students.

The search for the Director of the HRI is internal to the University of Connecticut, with the following requirements: status as a tenured full-time faculty member with a demonstrated commitment to human rights scholarship; commitment to undergraduate and graduate education; international research and teaching interests; demonstrated experience in administration, including budgeting; ability to market and recruit; excellent communication skills, including the ability to effectively network; and, above all, enthusiasm and organizational skills needed to lead a high-quality and dynamic program.  The Director reports to the Vice Provost for Global Affairs, works closely with faculty across departments and schools throughout the university to develop and expand human rights learning, provides academic oversight and vision to the academic research clusters, and actively engages donors and foundations to pursue new funding opportunities.
