    Keynote Speaker

Jorge Delva, Ph.D., M.S.W., Professor and Associate Dean, University of Michigan, School of Social Work

In this presentation, Dr. Delva, a highly successful international researcher will describe, compare, and contrast his experiences building research partnerships in the U.S. and globally.  Dr. Delva has found that while partnership building can be highly rewarding, it is also a complex and time consuming process. Building on examples from his international work focused on substance abuse and related behaviors in the US, Chile, the Ukraine, and South Korea, he will talk about his perspective on what it takes to build successful extramurally funded research. Using an interactive presentation format, attendees will gain first-hand knowledge that can be applied to their research agendas - knowledge that will potentially enhance their potential to obtain successful extramural research funding support.

Dr. Jorge Delva, a native of Chile, is Professor and Associate Dean for Research at the School of Social Work at the University of Michigan. He conducts research focusing on addressing and reducing health disparities and helping improve the lives of low-income and racial and ethnic minority populations. His research began in Honolulu two decades ago where he worked on SAMHSA-funded projects aimed at improving the health and mental health of Asian and Pacific Islander children and their families. Globally, he has conducted research in Central America, Uruguay, Chile, and Korea and is presently developing projects in China and Ukraine.
