Special Events and Receptions

  • 12/10 2014 Edward Marth Mentorship Award Event

Please join us on December 10, 2014 at 4:00 pm at The Graduate School located on the second floor of the Whetten Graduate Center for the presentation of the 2014 Edward C. Marth Mentorship Award to John Mathieu. Light refreshments will be served.

Dr. Mathieu is a Professor of Management at the University of Connecticut, and holds the Friar Chair in Leadership and Teams at UConn. His graduate students have been extremely successful. Both current and former students and his faculty colleagues testify to his commitment to his students and their careers. As Dr. Mathieu himself puts it, “My experience is that the harder I work with graduate students, the harder they in turn work…I tell them that I will find out where they are at – and then I’ll keep raising the bar…If you do this for their benefit, make clear why we need to invest such effort, and let them know that there is as safety valve (aka, I will not let them drown); then they know that you care about them and are doing it for their benefit. And then they respond and do great things.” Dr. Mathieu’s work is an inspiration to us all.

Dr. Mathieu’s primary areas of interest include models of team and multi-team effectiveness, leadership, training effectiveness, and cross-level models of organizational behavior. He has worked with several Fortune 500 companies, the armed services (i.e., Army, Navy, and Air Force), federal and state agencies (e.g., NRC, NASA, FAA, DOT), and numerous public and private organizations. He is a Fellow of the Society for Industrial/Organizational Psychology, American Psychological Association, and the Academy of Management. He serves on numerous editorial boards and has guest edited special volumes of top-level journals.

The UConn AAUP established the Edward C. Marth Mentorship Award to recognize the leadership and dedication of Edward Marth, former Executive Director of the UConn AAUP Chapter, and to encourage and reward outstanding mentoring of graduate students by UConn Graduate Faculty members.
