  • GA Position Available: Office of Public Engagement

    The Office of Public Engagement (OPE) is seeking a full time 11 month Graduate Assistant to work closely with the Director of Engagement in the daily management of the New England University Assisted Community School Collaborative (NE UACSC).

    As one of the core values of the institution, Engagement is an integral part of the recently approved Academic Vision for the University of Connecticut. One of the five overarching goals in UConn’s Path to Excellence is achieving excellence in engagement. The University is recognized by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching with the elective designation as a Community Engagement Institution and in 2013 was one of the five Presidential Award winners in the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll.

    Organized under the auspices of the Office of the Provost, OPE is responsible for the leadership, coordination, connection, facilitation, fostering, preparation and promotion of outreach programs and engaged scholarship which serve the public good, help prepare our students to be leaders in their chosen fields, and support faculty and staff in scholarly outreach efforts. Through the work of the Service Learning Director and in collaboration with ITL, OPE is leading the effort to increase the number of service learning courses through the faculty fellows program. OPE coordinates meetings and professional development for faculty and staff through the university wide Public Engagement Forum. OPE supports and collaborates with all UConn campuses to increase the relevant responsible and reciprocal practice of engaged scholarship and community engagement.

     

    The New England University Assisted Community School Collaborative (NE UACSC) is a grant supported project to develop a regional center to provide training and technical assistance to the New England region.

     

    Under the direction of OPE and in consultation with the Netter Center, the Duties and Responsibilities:

     

    1. Plan, implement, manage and evaluate NE UACSC activities and programs
      • Plan, implement and evaluate a Spring Conference on University Assisted Schools for New England to be held on the UConn Storrs campus.
      • Conduct a needs assessment of New England needs for community based schools and university assisted activities.
      • Conduct meeting at ERCC
    2. Travel as needed
      • Travel with the Director to The Netter Center for Community Partnerships in Philadelphia, PA for consultation purposes. (2 trips anticipated during the year)
      • Travel to the Eastern Regional Campus Compact conference, Jacksonville, FL, October 15-17, 2014.
    3. Communicate with Director and key constituents on a regular basis
    4. Design marketing materials for NE UACSC
    5. Assist with procurement of additional grant or philanthropic money for continued NE UACSC activities
    6. Complete other duties as assigned

     

    Commitment: 20 hours per week; schedule will vary based on availability and programmatic needs.

    Qualifications: must be enrolled in related graduate program at UConn; strong written and verbal communications; demonstrated supervisory experience; strong organizational and programming skills; demonstrated experience with Microsoft Office programs, graphic and web based design skills

    Preferred Qualifications: enrollment in a related UConn PhD program, preferably Educational Leadership, Higher Education Student Affairs or Public Policy; experience with event coordination and event management; experience leading or participating in service learning activities; related professional experience.
