  • 8/31 Human Subjects Requested:Grapefruit Research Study

Study on the changes in Furocoumarin and its Metabolites in Human Blood and Urine after Grapefruit Consumption.

The University of Connecticut Department of Nutritional Sciences is looking for volunteers to take part in a research study. The purpose of this study is to understand how the components of grapefruit are changed in our body when we consume grapefruits. Grapefruit is one of the most commonly consumed fruits by Americans and about one-fifth of Americans have grapefruit juice for breakfast. Some recent studies reported that grapefruit consumption may increase the risk of certain diseases. However, the fate of grapefruit components in the human body is unknown. Participants will be asked to visit the study center in Storrs, CT, 3 times. It will take about 5 hours at the study center. You will be asked to provide 3 blood and 2 urine samples.

To qualify for this study you must be the following:

    • Not allergic to grapefruit
    • Not taking prescription drugs that interact negatively with grapefruit
    • 20 to 30 years old (women must not be pregnant or nursing)
    • A Non-smoker or have quit smoking for at least 3 months prior to the start of the study
    • Healthy, without cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer, or arthritis
    • Willing to eat two grapefruits or drink 2 cups of grapefruit juice at the study visit
    • Willing to stop taking other multivitamins or dietary supplements
    • Willing to complete a brief telephone interview to determine study eligibility

You will help scientists better understand the connection between grapefruit consumption and health risk. Participants will receive up to $120 for completing the study.
