  • Seeking Sedentary, Overweight Males for Study

The Human Performance Laboratory at the University of Connecticut – Storrs Campus is seeking volunteers for a research study regarding vascular function.

This study will compare the changes in blood vessels of males currently enrolled in an exercise training study to the blood vessels of males who do not exercise.  It will help determine if a seven-week exercise intervention improves the function of blood vessels.

    Who qualifies for this study?

Are you a male between ages 18 and 34?

Do you have a Body Mass Index between 25 and 30?

                Calculate your BMI here

Have you exercised for fewer than 60 minutes per week for the past 3 months?

    Are you a non-smoker and drink ≤ 3 alcoholic drinks/day and ≤21 alcoholic drinks/week?

You may qualify if you answered yes to the above questions!

You may not participate in this study if you exhibit any of the following:

    -       Tobacco use in any form

    -       Currently diagnosed with or are taking medications for a metabolic or cardiovascular disease (for example: type II diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, etc.)

    -       Resting systolic blood pressure ≥ 140 mmHg or resting diastolic blood pressure ≥90 mmHg

    -       Currently take anti-inflammatory medications (aspirin, NSAIDs, etc.)

You will attend a screening session to measure your height, weight, blood pressure, and hip/waist circumferences. If you qualify for the study after the screening, you will be expected to continue exercising fewer than 60 minutes per week for the next three months. You will report to the Human Performance Laboratory four times (across three months) for flow mediated dilation measurements via ultrasound imaging.
