Albert Herring (1947) explores societal pressures, social taboos, and the fate of outsiders; however, Britten deals with these major issues with a healthy dose of levity. Set in a small English village in 1900, Albert Herring is centered on the celebration of May Day and the crowning of the May Queen. When no female is found to meet the qualifications of the May Queen, the high and mighty in the community decide to have a May King instead, and they crown the shy son of the local grocer, Albert Herring. But things take a dramatic turn after the festival when Albert, emboldened by his rum-spiked drink at the festival, finds the courage to stand up to his mother and find himself.
