The William Benton Museum of Art will launch the 2014 exhibition season next Tuesday, January 21, with Persepolis: Word & Image and Making the Movement Move: Photography, Student Activism, and Civil Rights.
Inspired by the 2014 UConn Reads book, Persepolis, Marjane's Satrapi's graphic novel and coming-of-age memoir, Persepolis: Word & Image draws from the museum's permanent collection to present some of the ways that text and art have functioned historically. A selection of works on loan from several contemporary Iranian artists serve to enhance the exhibition.
Making the Movement Move: Photography, Student Activism, and Civil Rights presents powerful images from the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 60s taken by renowned photographers and activists Danny Lyons and Ernest Withers.
DON'T MISS THE OPENING RECEPTION on Thursday, January 23, 4:30-7pm! It's free and sure to be fun!
A highlight of the evening will be the debut of Blues Without Borders, a new group of musicians from the UConn community:
Bass: Harry A. Frank, Board of Trustees Distinguished Professor of Chemistry
Drums: Lewis Gordon, Professor of Philosophy and African American Studies
Vocals: John Bailey, University Communications
Piano: Mark Overmyer-Velázquez, Associate Professor of History & Director, Institute of Latina/o, Caribbean and Latin American Studies
