Title: Integrating Evidence-Based Practices Within Special Education Teacher Preparation Programs

Abstract: Both legislations, IDEA (2004) and NCLB (2001) specifically state that teachers are required to utilize evidence-based practices (EBP) to meet the needs of students with disabilities. Special Education teacher preparation programs continuously strive to meet their ultimate goal of preparing effective educators who enter the field ready to meet the unique needs of their students. Research has shown that preservice teachers often leave the preparation programs with adequate knowledge about effective instructional practices but with very limited skills that allow them to use these practices effectively. The preparation process is not as simple as handing future teachers a list of EBP to choose from when they transition to K-12 classrooms. Rather, the process involves preparing them to (a) become knowledgeable about practices with empirical support, (b) effectively select practices for given scenarios, and (c) implement these practices with high levels of fluency and fidelity. This presentation will shed light on our roles as teacher educators in preparing future teachers to become equipped with cutting-edge knowledge about EBP and the professional wisdom to select, implement, and analyze these practices. This presentation will also discuss a number of clinically-rich instructional practices (e.g., reflective teaching, peer observation, and technology-based practices) that faculty members can utilize to ensure that our preservice teachers know and use EBP in their own classrooms.
