  • 11/19 Collegium: Plus ultra Music of Imperial Courts,

Tuesday 11/19/19 @ 8:00 PM von der Mehden Recital Hall

“Plus ultra” (“ever further”) was the personal motto of the Habsburg Holy Roman Emperor Charles V (1500-1558). It represented his vision of a Christian empire extending beyond the boundaries of the Old World — into Africa and the Americas — and also his desire to rule over a unified Europe. The House of Habsburg had been founded in Switzerland in the eleventh century, moved to Austria in the thirteenth century, and then had acquired Burgundy, Spain, Bohemia, and other territories through a series of dynastic marriages. Our concert documents in music what happened next: the division of the line into Austrian and Spanish branches and expansion into the Americas over the course of the sixteenth century. Works by Clemens non Papa, Crecquillon, Josquin, la Rue, and Johann Joseph Fux.
