  • Joyce Brodsky, Emeritus Professor Dies at 87

    Joyce Brodsky passed away at her home on May 11 in Santa Cruz, California. Although she had recent heart surgery, she was active and working on a new article at the time of her death. Joyce grew up in Brooklyn, recieved a Masters in Art History at Yale University and was a leading and beloved member of the Department of Art and Art History from 1964-93 where she taught courses on Medieval, Modern and Contemporary Art. She was a member of the Medieval Studies Program. Faculty who were hired in the department under her leadership cite her as an important mentor and friend who built a sense of community in the department and was instrumental in creating visibility of the department within the larger university. 

    After retiring from UConn Joyce went on to become Department Head and taught classes on contempory art and theory at UC Santa Cruz.
    She published numberous articles in her lengthy and prolific career and her book "The Experience of Passage, The Paintings of Yun Gee and Li-Lan was published by University of Washington Press in 2008. Later in life Joyce became interested in and wrote about contemporary South Asian Art. She is survived by her daughter Shara Carder, son-in-law Michael and grandson Zeke of San Jose, and her brother Steve of Florida as well as numerous cousins, neices and nephews in New York.
