"Strengths-Based Approaches to Drug Use Prevention Among Urban Girls of Color"
Drug use and abuse research often ignores the role of resiliency among urban girls of color. This absence may further marginalize girls of color due to the misconceived view and understanding of their behaviors. In her talk, Ms. Opara will discuss her program of research which seeks to explore the gaps in drug abuse literature in understanding the protective factors for prevention among urban girls of color. In her work, she uses both quantitative and qualitative methodology to provide a strengths based view of families of color and their role in drug abuse prevention in an attempt to highlight the culturally-based family processes that serve as protective factors for this population.
