Rohingyas are thought to be the most oppressed ethnic group in recent history. These people have been fleeing to Bangladesh for decades to avoid oppression by their own government. In wake of the recent humanitarian crisis, we are hosting an awareness dinner on February 8th at the Alumni Center. Our keynote speaker, Dr. Wakar Uddin, is the Chairman and Founder of the Burmese Rohingya Association. He is an internationally recognized figure on this topic. Dr. Uddin is from Pennsylvania State University. UConn professor and the Director of the Asian American Studies Institute Dr. Cathy Schlund-Vials will be sharing how East Asian countries feel about the crisis. And last but not least, a Bangladeshi UConn alumni, Khairul Alam, will be sharing his personal experience working with the refugees in Bangladesh.
