  • Seeking Middle School Science Bowl Volunteers

    The Chemistry Department is once again hosting the CT Middle School Science Bowl and we are in the process of recruiting volunteers. Volunteering for this event is an excellent opportunity to enhance your CV/resume. 

    If you are interested in volunteering for this year's MSSB, then please read over the information below. 

    ABOUT THE MIDDLE SCHOOL SCIENCE BOWL

    The Middle School Science Bowl (MSSB) will be bringing 32 teams of CT middle schoolers (4-5 students/team + coaches + families) to campus on Saturday, February 24th for a day-long event. The students will compete in a Jeopardy-type competition where they answer questions in STEM. The winning team will represent Connecticut at the National Science Bowl competition in Washington, D.C. 

    EVENT INFORMATION

    DATE: Saturday, February 24th, 2018

    WHERE: Laurel Hall on the UConn Storrs campus

    TIME: The MSSB is a day-long event. We are looking for volunteers who are available ~8AM – 4:30 PM (although actual ending times may vary).

    VOLUNTEERS

    We will need help from volunteers in the following areas. If you would like to volunteer then please contact Dr. Joe DePasquale (joseph.depasquale@uconn.edu) by 1/31/18 with your 3 preferred roles (ranked in order of preference):

    • Moderators/Question Readers
    • Scorekeepers
    • Timekeepers
    • Runners
    • Administrative Help (team registration, food organization, etc.)

    Also, please let us know if you volunteered for this event in the past and/or had competed on a middle school or high school Science Bowl team (if so, please indicate roles/years as well if possible). 

    VOLUNTEER TRAINING/EVENT SETUP

    We will be hosting volunteer training sessions on the following nights (first-time volunteers must attend ONE of the two sessions):

    • Monday, Feb 19th @ 6PM (CHM A-304)
    • Tuesday, Feb 20th  @ 6PM (CHM A-304)

    Also, we ask all volunteers to help with event setup on Friday, Feb 23rd @ 6:30PM (LH 101)

    We cannot run the MSSB without the help of our many great volunteers! All volunteers will receive breakfast, lunch, and a Science Bowl t-shirt! Also, we would be happy to sign off on any paperwork if you’re involved in a student organization that requires community service hours. Thank you in advance for your time!
