  • Film study class - spring 2018

This spring, World film (drama 4152) will be a study of Frank Borzage's life and films.  The most original film artist to ever work in the Hollywood system, his films break most of the rules/conventions of classical filmmaking.   Ardently romantic and deeply philosophical, Borzage films argue the primacy of intuition and the positive abstract values of love and courage.   His formal style is highly unconventional with constant use of unusual angles, perspective sets, outstandingly atmospheric photography and the finest naturalistic acting in all American cinema.   Seeing art as 'useful' in the Socratic sense, Borzage's films are designed to enlighten and ennoble the viewer.  A study of his work can truly be a life changing experience.

The course requirements are a solid work ethic, professionalism (be there, on time, all the time), active verbal participation and considerable writing.  Also, a joint oral presentation.   Tues. 9:30-10:45, Wed. 6-9.   If interested, contact me for a permission #, if needed.
