Based on years of fieldwork and interviews in the Middle East, North Africa, and Europe, Krause’s new book Rebel Power explains why some national movements like the Zionists, Algerians, and Irish have been able to establish independent states like Israel, Algeria, and Ireland while others like the Palestinians, Kurds, and Basques have not. Furthermore, the book explains how nationalist groups like the Haganah and Irgun, Fatah and Hamas, and the IRA and SDLP cooperate to gain independence while simultaneously competing with each other to lead it, as well as why they opt for violent or nonviolent methods.
