Come join us at von der Mehden Recital Hall this Saturday, September 30 at 8pm for The Sound Is Acting, a unique concert that celebrates the music of John Cage.
Music education master's student Rex Sturdevant will be reading from Indeterminacy, a collection of ninety one-minute stories that Cage assembled over the course of his life. Guest pianist Nicholas Barra, a recent graduate of Western Connecticut State University, will perform several of Cage's work for piano, including excerpts from his Concert for Piano and Orchestra.
As the occurs for the duration of the performance, forty additional musicians will perform twenty-three of Cage's works simultaneously, at pre-determined points both on stage and throughout the hall.
The works will include Cage's time-based numbers pieces, including One4, One5, One6, Three2, Four, Four2, Four4, Five, Six, Seven, and Eight; his Solos for Clarinet, Baritone Saxophone, Trumpet, Trombone, and Voice; his Composed Improvisations for Snare Drum and One-Sided Drums With or Without Jangles; as well as 0'00", Aria, Music for Wind Instruments, Amores, and TV Köln. These works will be performed by UConn undergraduate and graduate music majors, as well as music alumni, and guest artists.
Admission to the concert is free. Plenty of free, well-lit parking is available after 5pm in the Fine Arts Lot adjacent to the hall, as well as in S-Lot.
