  • UConn Police Crime Awareness

The UConn Police Department has received multiple reports of stolen auto parts since the start of the academic semester. The stolen auto parts have been the catalytic converter component of vehicles exhaust system, which can be removed and sold. Earlier this year, police received numerous reports of stolen tires and rims from vehicles as well.

The UConn Police Department has responded to these incidents by increasing patrols of the affected parking areas during evening and overnight hours. Recent and past incidents have occurred near Hilltop Apartments, Northwood Apartments, and South Campus Residences. Members of our community are encouraged to contact police immediately by dialing 911 if they observe suspicious activity or crimes in progress in parking areas or other areas of campus. Routine information for police can be given by calling 860-486-4800 or by submitting a crime tip at CrimeAlerts@uconn.edu.

The UConn Police Department is dedicating resources to this continuing problem and will continue to work towards identifying those responsible. While every situation is different, following some of these general crime prevention tips may help increase personal safety:

    • Always lock your car or scooter and pocket the key.
    • Always make sure your windows are closed.
    • Never leave valuables in sight and do not leave important papers or credit cards in your vehicle.
    • Always try to park in well-lit areas.
