This course surveys LGBT plays and films from around the world. We will examine not only the cultural influences that produced these gay and lesbian plays and films, but also how these plays and films became a “cultural force” that influenced societal change. The course will begin with the noh drama of medieval Japan (i.e., Atsumori) and the historical plays of the English Renaissance (i.e., Edward II), delve into the English Restoration and Twentieth Century and conclude by examining more recent examples of mixed-media representations of queer life (i.e., Fun Home) and their implications.
This period Studies class focusing on Gay and Lesbian Film and Theatre is open to all undergraduate UConn students. It can be taken as a W course to fulfill that University requirement. It is also offered as a non-W course for those students who have completed their “W” requirements. If interested please come to class on Tuesday 9:30 am (Drama/Music 219B) and get a permission number from Professor Meachum.
