  • 8/15 Spring Valley Student Farm Plant Now For Fall

Tuesday Tour on August 15 from 3:00-8:00 PM at UConn Spring Valley Student Farm.

Plant seeds now for fall harvest! Summer is not the only time that you can grow vegetables in your garden. With a little advance planning and planting, you can harvest some tasty vegetables for your Columbus and Thanksgiving Day dinners. Visit the Farm to learn what vegetables you can plant now for harvesting this fall.

The students living and working at SVSF are ready to take you on a guided tour of the Farm. They will show you the fields, greenhouses, apiary and edible forest garden. The students will explain how they employ organic growing methods to cultivate a wide variety of vegetables, herbs, edible flowers and small fruits for use on the UConn campus.

While visiting the Farm you can learn about the on-going IDEA grant aquaponic growing system and air quality monitoring research projects. Ask about the new solar thermal heating system for the greenhouse, funded by a University of Connecticut Academic Vision grant. This is an interdepartmental student experiential research project planned for fall 2017.

You are welcome to join us on Tuesdays for hands-on learning about organic farming.  No previous experience necessary! We provide the tools, techniques and opportunity to explore the fascinating world of healthy local food production. Remember to dress for outdoor conditions.

Our produce is available for purchase at the Farm Fresh Market, in front of Homer Babbidge Library, every Thursday from 11:30 to 1:30 now through September. Enjoy our products prepared in a delicious meal at Chuck and Augie’s restaurant, One Plate Two Plates and at select dining halls.

Spring Valley Student Farm is collaboration with Dining Services, Residential Life, College of Agriculture, Health and Natural Resources, EcoHouse as part of First Year Programs and Learning Communities, Office of Environmental Policy, and Office of Public Engagement – Service Learning.
