The History of STEM Education Equity Policy

Many programs and policies have been recommended to increase the numbers of women and girls of color in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Yet, despite increased numbers in the STEM pipeline, progress for racial and ethnic minorities—particularly girls—has been slow and irregular across these fields. One way to improve STEM equity policy is to understand the history, underlying philosophical assumptions, and discourses surrounding the problem itself. This lecture will explore how these philosophies and discourses are both framed and realized in STEM equity policy documents from the past, as well as how they are carried forward and transformed in present policy initiatives. Though there have been increased calls for diversity and inclusion in STEM fields, education is simultaneously situated in a context of increased privatization, marketization, and competition. Further, bearing in mind a volatile political and social climate, how can we work toward a more inclusive, just, and cooperative vision of STEM education policy and practice?
