    Community Service Honor Roll

     

    The University of Connecticut has been named to the 2015 President’s Honor Roll in three categories; general community service, economic opportunity and education.  The University was named with Distinction for the General Community Service Category for their work in 2013-2014 in dedication to community, service learning and civic engagement activities. 

     

    The President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll recognizes institutions of higher education that support exemplary community service programs and raise the visibility of effective practices in campus community partnerships.

    The Honor Roll’s Presidential Award is the highest federal recognition an institution can receive for its commitment to community, service-learning, and civic engagement.

     

    CNCS has administered the award since 2006 in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Education and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, as well as the American Council on Education, Campus Compact, and the Interfaith Youth Core. UConn has been recognized six times since 2006 for their work on community service and engagement.  In 2013 UConn was recognized with the top honors for being one of the top four Universities in the Country.

    The President's Honor Roll recognizes higher education institutions in four categories: General Community Service, Interfaith Community Service, Economic Opportunity and Education.

    Over 133 programs and initiatives engaged UConn students, faculty and staff in service and engagement activities during the 2013-2-2014 Academic Year.  As part of the submission UConn Highlighted three highly engaged programs in their submission.

    Husky Reads and Husky Nutrition have been in existence since 1994 and during the 2013-2014 academic year there were 12 staff and 191 student’s participants which delivered a range of nutrition education and physical activities programs at 195 locations for low-income families and children residing in Connecticut with a concentration in the capitol city of Hartford and in Windham County.

    In 2013-2014 UConn was also in the seventh year of a partnership with the national non-profit Jumpstart for Young Children program.   The program consisted of 85 UC students who committed to at least a 300-hour volunteer service term as minimum time AmeriCorps members.  These 85 students served a total of 26,186 hours working towards fulfilling Jumpstart’s mission of working toward the day every child in America enters kindergarten prepared to succeed.
