    "PUERTO RICO, PUERTO RICANS"

Edwin Meléndez, Director, Center for Puerto Rican Studies (Centro), and Professor Urban Affairs and Planning, Hunter College

    12:30pm - Student Union 304B

This talk examines the economic, fiscal and unfolding humanitarian crisis in Puerto Rico and its impact on stateside Puerto Ricans. Puerto Rico is in a prolonged recession resulting in a fiscal crisis, public service cuts and massive migration to the US leading to a significant decline in the island’s population. Congress enacted Promesa legislation and appointed a task force to examine long term solutions to the crisis. What lies ahead for Puerto Rico and for stateside Puerto Ricans?

Dr. Meléndez is a Professor of Urban Affairs and Planning at Hunter-CUNY and Director of Centro. An economist by training, he has conducted considerable research in the areas of Puerto Rican and Latino studies, economic development, labor markets, and poverty.
