    Carmen-Francesca Banciu

Language Play: Transformation through Writing and Creativity”

    22 September - 2 p.m. - Gentry 119E

Born in Lipova, Romania, Carmen-Francesca Banciu was banned from publishing her work in Romania as a result of being awarded the International Short Story Award of the City of Arnsberg for the story "Das strahlende Ghetto" (“The Radiant Ghetto,” 1985). After becoming a DAAD Berlin Artist in Resident in 1991, Banciu emigrated to Berlin and began writing almost exclusively in German. Since then, her work has been translated into numerous languages, including the recent editions of Mother’s Day: Song of a Sad Mother and Berlin is My Paris: Stories from the Capital. Her book-length works deal with the geographic, psychic, and linguistic migrations of the woman author in Europe under and following the fall of Communism and is particularly inspiring for second-language learners exploring their creativity in languages other than their native tongue.

The talk will be in English and is open to all students and faculty

Co-Sponsored by the Humanities Institute, German Studies and the Languages Graduate Student Association
