  • 9/23 Shakespeare's Songbook at the Benton Museum

"Shakespeare’s Songbook" and "Tallis's Spem in alium" by the UConn Collegium Musicum, Eric Rice, director. 8 p.m., Benton Museum

Shakespeare's plays are replete with music. It plays substantial allegorical and symbolic roles in the plays, was performed both within the drama and as incidental music, and is mentioned by numerous characters. Our concert explores music that was either discussed or performed within the plays using instruments and techniques of the period. We also are also performing several motets and anthems from Shakespeare's time, and the conclusion of the concert will be a performance of Thomas Tallis’s renowned 40-part Spem in alium, performed during Shakespeare’s lifetime at the 1610 investiture of the Henry Frederick as Prince of Wales.
