Enjoy a wonderful evening on the Great Lawn at Storrs Congregational Church UCC, take in some wonderful music, and help support a local good cause... all at the same time!
The annual summer Concerts on the Lawn series at Storrs Congregational Church UCC features the Dunham Memorial Carillon (tower bells) housed in the church steeple as well as a variety of local and touring music artists. The proceeds from each concert's free-will donations will go to benefit a local service-mission agency.
On Thursday, September 1 at 6:00 pm, on the Dunham Carillon we'll feature Carillonneur-in-residence David Maker, who assumed stewardship of the Dunham Carillon in 1994, performing, teaching, and undertaking many public relations initiatives. His advocacy resulted in the instrument’s renovation in 2011. From 2007 to 2009 he also served as Carillonneur of Trinity College in Hartford. In 2009, he retired as Associate Head of the Music Department at the University of Connecticut. In 2015, the Willimantic Orchestra gave a premiere performance of his overture “The Lamplighters of Ventimiglia.” (David Maker's concert on the Carillon was originally scheduled as part of our August 11th concert, but was postponed due to weather.)
Freewill donations taken at the concert will support the Quiet Corner Refugee Resettlement. QCRR is a partnership of more than 30 faith communities and more than 200 Quiet Corner residents responding to the world-wide refugee crisis. Through a broad, interfaith core leadership team and a strong partnership with WAIM, QCRR already this summer welcomed a Syrian refugee family to the area, and will continue preparations for future refugee resettlement opportunities.
Other details: The outdoor concerts are free of charge and open to the public. Seating is on the lawn of the Storrs Congregational Church UCC at 2 North Eagleville Road, adjacent to the University of Connecticut’s main campus in Storrs. Feel free to bring along a picnic dinner and dessert, lawn chairs, and blankets to enjoy the music. And invite your family and friends too!
