    Hands of Grief. Benton Museum

The Benton Museum presents a new exhibition (May 6-22), Hands of Grief, featuring 10 etchings, lithographs and woodcuts by famous German artist Käthe Kollwitz (1867-1945). Curated by students from different majors across the colleges, this exhibition forces us to confront death, loss, and mourning. The 19 students in Anthropological Perspectives on Art (Anth. 3450W) ask: Why are death, mourning and grieving such taboo subjects in our society? Why do we shy away from images of death and suffering? How come we too often forget about the pain of mourning?

In a world where wars are raging in the Middle East and Africa, the raw images created by Kollwitz between 1897 and 1923 provoke visceral responses about the victims of conflicts. Kollwitz’s hands become symbols of universal emotions of grief.

The opening reception for Hands of Grief will take place on May 6th from 1p.m. to 3p.m. in the main gallery.
