We would like to announce our upcoming Early Spring Exhibition, the first of our final 3 exhibitions at the Alexey von Schlippe Gallery of Art, located in the Branford House Mansion, on UConn’s Avery Point Campus in Groton, CT.
The exhibition runs from Saturday, March 5th through Saturday, April 16th 2016.
There will be an Opening Reception on Friday, March 11th 6-8 PM.
The Feb. 19th Reception is open to the public and will feature live music with the
Bill Morrison and Kent Hewitt Jazz Duo.
The AvS Gallery is proud to present an exhibition featuring the outstanding work of these five artists:
Jocelyn Braxton Armstrong of Westport, CT exhibits her stunning porcelain sculptures in the form of powerful installations, through which she “examines issues relating to feminism past, present and future, exploring the causes of gender based violence and inequality, from both a personal and global perspective” .
Michael Francis Donovan of Naugatuck, CT exhibits his fascinating and thought provoking found object sculptures. Donovan states, “My work explores the act of preservation. I am interested in utility as a means to create a self-sustained existence for my objects. …Each structure implies permanently suspended movement.”
Miranda Girard of Trumbull, CT exhibits her lovely landscapes and still life paintings. Girard states, “For me, a painting is a visual poem. The narrative use of subtle cues of color, texture, and composition present a familiar person, place or object in a fresh way, allowing the viewer to pause, dream, reflect.”
Randy Harter of New Rochelle , NY exhibits his fabulous realistic paintings of iconic images bringing to mind days gone by and the gutsy rawness of today’s city streets. Harter states, “I find cities and the characters that inhabit them fascinating and that's what I paint.
In particular I find the seemingly most ordinary moments anything but that.
To me at those times the stories and humanity reveal themselves.”
Michael McNabney of Ledyard, CT exhibits his beautiful observations of nature. McNabney states, “this selection of paintings expressively treats the natural beauty of southeastern Connecticut, specifically the area on and around Lantern Hill, and the rocky shoreline around the mouth of the Thames River.
Rather than panoramic vistas, I generally prefer to paint what is up close, in a cropped or "open" composition. My preference for organic subjects, depicted intimately, stems from a love of nature, and an interest in negative shapes.
