“Seeing Deeper into the World of the Great White Shark”

    By Gregory Skomal, Ph.D.

Senior Marine Fisheries Biologist, MA Div. of Marine Fisheries

Almost all we know about white shark behavior comes from surface observations, but we know very little about what are they doing when they dive deep.  Over the last five years, we have been working to develop an underwater robot capable of tracking and imaging the behavior of white sharks.  As a result, we have captured, for the first time, remarkable images showing the behavior of white sharks when they leave our sight.

Dr. Gregory Skomal is an accomplished marine biologist, underwater explorer, photographer, and author. He has been a senior fisheries biologist with Massachusetts Marine Fisheries since 1987 and currently heads up the Massachusetts Shark Research Program (MSRP). He is also an adjunct professor at the University of Massachusetts School of Marine Science and Technology and an adjunct scientist at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. He holds a master’s degree from the University of Rhode Island and a Ph.D. from Boston University. Through the MSRP, Greg has been actively involved in the study of life history, ecology, and physiology of sharks using new and innovative technology. He has written dozens of scientific research papers and his work has been highlighted in a number of film and television documentaries including programs for National Geographic, Discovery Channel, and PBS.

Lecture series is FREE and open to the public.  Lectures begin at 7:30 p.m., with light refreshments at 7:10.
