  • 10/27 Women's Self-Defense Class Hosted by UConn PD

The UConn Police Department’s Safety Techniques & Awareness Resource Team and the Dean of Students Office are working together to reaffirm our goal of providing the highest level of safety and well-being to the UConn community by offering a free-of-charge women's self-defense course.

The goal of the UConn Police S.T.A.R.T. program is to offer an easily accessible program of education and awareness for our community. The Women’s Self-Defense Program helps women develop a foundation of basic self-defense and offers them viable options when confronted with various threats of violence. We also welcome guest instructors from the Office of Diversity and Equity, Community Standards, the Women’s Center, and Connecticut Sexual Assault Crisis Centers and other service providers.

This 14 hour self-defense course, will run for 4 consecutive Tuesday nights starting October 27, 2015 through November 17, 2015, each class starts promptly at 5:30 pm, ending around 9pm, each class will be held at UConn's Shippee Hall basement rec room. The first 3 classes are mandatory to complete the course while the 4th class allows students to take part in hands on simulated exercises is voluntary.  This comprehensive course progresses from awareness, prevention, risk reduction, and avoidance to basic physical self-defense exercises. The course we are currently teaching women is the "R.A.D. For Women: Basic Physical Defense".
