  • GA Position: Office of Public Engagement

    The Office of Public Engagement (OPE) is seeking a Graduate Assistant to work closely with the Director of Engagement in the daily management of the New England University-Assisted Community Schools Collaborative (NE UACSC).

    As one of the core values of the institution, Public Engagement is an integral part of the Academic Vision for the University of Connecticut. One of the five overarching goals in UConn’s Path to Excellence is achieving excellence in engagement. The University is recognized by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching with the elective designation as a Community Engagement Institution. In 2013 UConn was one of the five Presidential Award winners in the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll and in 2014 was listed on the Honor Roll for the 5th consecutive year.

    Organized under the auspices of the Office of the Provost, OPE is responsible for the leadership, coordination, connection, facilitation, fostering, preparation and promotion of outreach programs and engaged scholarship which serve the public good, help prepare our students to be leaders in their chosen fields, and support faculty and staff in scholarly outreach efforts. Through the work of the Service Learning Director and in collaboration with ITL, OPE is leading the effort to increase the number of service learning courses through the faculty fellows program. OPE coordinates meetings and professional development for faculty and staff through the university wide Public Engagement Forum. OPE supports and collaborates with all UConn campuses to increase the relevant responsible and reciprocal practice of engaged scholarship and community engagement.

     

    The New England University-Assisted Community Schools Collaborative (NE UACSC) is supported by a grant from the Netter Center for Community Partnerships at UPenn to implement a regional center to provide training and technical assistance to the New England region.

    Duties and Responsibilities:

    • Plan, implement, manage and evaluate NE UACSC activities and programs including scheduling and marketing.
    • Travel with the Director to The Netter Center for Community Partnerships in Philadelphia, PA for consultation purposes. (2 trips anticipated during the year)
    • Travel to the Eastern Regional Campus Compact conference in Newark, NJ, October 14-16, 2015. Plan and conduct a meeting convened by the Director for members of the New England delegations.
    • Plan a Conference on University-Assisted Schools for the New England region.

     

    Commitment: 20 hours per week; schedule will vary based on availability and programmatic needs.

    Qualifications: PhD enrollment required in education, psychology, or related area; strong written and verbal communications; demonstrated supervisory experience; strong organizational and programming skills; demonstrated experience with Microsoft Office programs.

    Preferred Qualifications: work experience in inner city K-12 systems; experience with event coordination and event management: experience leading or participating in service learning activities; related professional experience.
