A letter from a student who went on this trip last year:

    Hello,

My name is Nicolette Pennington, and I am one of the fortunate students that traveled to Cape Town, South Africa last summer. This trip was by far the best experience in my college career thus far, and I would encourage all students to travel to Cape Town.

UConn Learning Communities in Cape Town is a faculty-led UConn Education Abroad program in which about 20 students live and learn together for 4 weeks. UConn professor, Dr. Marita McComiskey, and longtime friend of UConn, Rev. Vernon Rose of South Africa, have created an incredible program to immerse you in Cape Town culture. The program includes a WGSS course on race, gender and the politics of South Africa, a three week internship in your area of interest, a weekend safari, and much more.

INTEREST: I had always wanted to study abroad in college, but I had not had any experience traveling prior to coming to UConn. I did not know if I could handle being away for an entire semester so I looked into summer programs. I was drawn to the Cape Town program because of my interest in race and gender and doing an internship in the medical field. After meeting with Vernon Rose at an info session, I was determined to be part of the program.

FINANCES: As the possibility of traveling abroad became more real, so did my worry about the cost. Luckily, there are many national scholarships and the Global Citizen scholarship at UConn that provide funding for study abroad programs. I was fortunate enough to receive the Gilman International Scholarship and UConn Global Citizen Scholarship that funded over half the cost of my trip. Do not let the cost deter you from this amazing experience; where there is a will, there is a way!

PRE-DEPARTURE: Before traveling to Cape Town, there was a 4-week pre-departure course in which I met the other UConn students I would be traveling with. We had discussions and I wrote journals about my thoughts, feelings and what I wanted out of the trip. This was extremely helpful because we traveled together on the long flight there and once we already arrived we knew each other's names and a lot about each other.

WHILE THERE: While in Cape Town, you live in a house in a nice residential area with the other UConn students, where I felt very safe and comfortable. The program had many day trips and events planned including, attending a service at a Baptist Church, visiting Boulder's Beach and Cape Point, and going to performances and dinners. My favorite part of the trip was learning so much from Marita and Vernon in our classes which primarily involved discussion, a homestay, and the internship. Interning at a clinic allowed me to work hands-on with patiends and solidified my desire to become a doctor. Other students had different kinds of internships that fit their interests.

At the end of the four weeks, I wish I could have stayed longer. I am so thankful for the experiences I had while in Cape Town and plan to live there one day and work as a doctor. I encourage all of you to travel to Cape Town and have your own amazing experiences!
