    New Course - Spring 2015

Interested in Human Rights in the Americas?

LLAS/HRTS 3998: UNDERSTANDING TESTIMONIAL LITERATURE considers narratives of protest and resistance in North, Central and South America. We examine a variety of genres throughout the Americas, such as prison literature, slave narratives, "whistle-blower" novels, the poetry of Central American revolutions, and autobiographical accounts of human rights abuses. Some of the texts are by professional writers, but many are by ordinary people who wish to bring to light civil and human rights violations. This course educates students about the literary criticism of testimonial literature and students then apply its theories broadly to course readings.

Reading knowledge of Spanish is helpful but not required.
