The University of Connecticut Jazz Ensemble will be performing tonight at 7pm at the Co-Op Bookstore in Storrs Center.  The concert is a tribute to American jazz musician Miles Davis.  Davis was one of the most influential musicians of the 20th Century and instrumental to the development of jazz music, including bebop, hard jazz, modal jazz, jazz fusion, and cool jazz.  The concert will recreate Davis’ “Birth of the Cool,” an innovative work that was influenced by classical music and was vital to the birth of cool jazz, a style marked by its relaxed tempo and lighter tone in comparison to bebop and which often employs formal arrangements and incorporates classical elements.  “Birth of the Cool” features arrangements by Johnny Carisi, Gil Evans, Gerry Mulligan and John Lewis.

The concert is directed by Earl MacDonald, Associate Professor of Music and Director of Jazz Studies, and will be held tonight at 7pm at the Co-Op Bookstore located at One Royce Circle, 101 Storrs Center.
