  • 11/10 Campus Food Drive- Helping Us Help Others

The “Helping Us-Help Others” annual campus wide food drive is once again taking place prior to the Thanksgiving Day holiday. This year’s food drive will take place from November 10th to 14th. The need at our local food banks this year is even greater than it was a year ago. The Connecticut Food Bank recently partnered with Feeding America, the country’s leading domestic hunger-relief organization to sponsor the Hunger in America 2014 study. This study documents household demographics and the challenges that Connecticut residents face.

    • 498,460 of Connecticut’s residents are food insecure
    • 1 in 5 children in Connecticut is hungry.
    • Connecticut’s two major food banks only meet 1/3 of the daily food need in our state.

Major sponsors of this year’s food drive are: The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), CONNPIRG’s Hunger and Homelessness Campaign, UConn Council on Family Relations (HDFS), and the Office of Community Outreach along with dozens of supporting campus offices and student organizations. We are working together to collect nonperishable food items (canned goods) for individuals in need.

Donations will be distributed to the Willimantic, Manchester, Putnam and Storrs-Mansfield area food pantries.

If every student, faculty and staff member at UConn Storrs donated ONE can of food we would have over 29,000 cans of food to donate to families in need. Help make a difference during this holiday season.

Food Drop Off boxes are located at over 40 locations around campus and will be in place through Friday. If you do not have a drop off box in your building but have a donation to make please contact us Michael.morrill@uconn.edu and we will make arrangements to pick up your donation.
