  • 11/15 Voices of Freedom Concert

UConn Voices of Freedom will be performing at the von der Mehden Recital Hall on November 15th at 6pm.  The Voices of Freedom is a unique ensemble of 80+ students that performs traditional, contemporary, and praise and worship Gospel music.  The choir formed in response to the Civil Right’s Struggle of the 1960’s and has been vital to the UConn community for over 30 years.  This is a very important year for the choir as it marks Rev. Lisa Clayton’s 20th year as director.  In celebration of the event Voices of Freedom has a very special concert planned with four featured musical guests: Geoffrey Golden, Syreeta Thompson, Lemmie Battles, and headliner Deon Kipping.

Geoffrey Golden is a rising young star in the Gospel music community.  This year he won Sunday Best, a national televised Gospel music competition in the vein of American Idol.  Stellar Award nominee Syreeta Thompson, “The Trumpet Lady,” is a Jazz musician-turned Gospel.  Syreeta’s mission is to touch souls with her music.  She created Mission Music to encourage children aged 5-15 to become involved in their local music and art programs.  Lemmie Battles is a traditional Gospel singer.  She was the lead soloist for the Chicago Mass Choir and has also enjoyed a successful solo career with several national hits.  She is a Grammy, Dove and Stellar nominated artist.  Finally, headliner and Connecticut native Deon Kipping is a Gospel and Christian singer, songwriter and producer.  He produced his first session before even graduating high school and is now a national recording artist.

The concert will also include an alumni show featuring some of Voices of Freedom’s most popular songs through the years.  Selections include “I am a Friend of God,” “God is Great,” and many more!

Voices of Freedom will be performing at 6pm sharp on November 15th at the von der Mehden Recital Hall located at 875 Coventry Rd across from Mirror Lake on the UConn campus. Tickets are $10 for adults and free for students and children.  Plenty of free parking is conveniently located across the street in Lot 1.
