"You, Too, Can Interpret the Constitution"
Lecture by Mathilde Cohen, Associate Professor of Law and Robert D. Glass Scholar, UConn School of Law
Have you ever read the Constitution? It is certainly shorter than any Harry Potter or Twilight installment. Is it as captivating and readily understandable? This is what Professor Cohen will try to convince you of on Constitution day, an observance that recognizes the adoption of the United States Constitution more than two centuries ago.
The U.S. Constitution is the oldest and shortest written Constitution of any major government in the world. However, a 2010 survey showed that only one third of the people surveyed, and usually the older ones, have read the entire thing. Constitution Day is the day to reclaim the Constitution and to think about two overarching questions: Who decides what the Constitution means and how is it interpreted?
