  • Human Subjects Requested: Knife Design Study

I am recruiting subjects to participate in a research study to determine the ease-of-use of knife handle designs for people with arthritis. The participants will be asked to press a knife down onto a force platform for a number of trials, which will take approximately 30 minutes of the participant’s time.

To participate in this study you must be between the ages of 18-23.  The female subjects must be between 150-175 lbs (± 20 lbs) and between 58-64 in (± 3 in) according to CDC averages.  The male subjects must be between 160-195 lbs (± 15 lbs) and between 63-69 in (± 3 in) according to CDC averages.  You must be overall healthy and have the ability to stand and use a kitchen knife correctly.

Your participation in this study is voluntary. There will be no compensation for participation in this study. If you choose not to participate or to withdraw from the study at any time, there will be no penalty to you whatsoever.  The results of the research may be published, but your name will not be used.

If you would like to participate in this study please contact undergraduate student Ashwini Joshi at ashwini.joshi@uconn.edu. This study is conducted under Dr. Krystyna Gielo-Perczak in the Biomedical Engineering department. If you have any questions concerning your rights as a research participant, you may contact the University of Connecticut Institutional Review Board (IRB) at 860-486-8802.
