Women in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) are presented in very specific ways by the mainstream media.  Shows like The Big Bang Theory, Bones, and NCIS portray women as stereotypes.  She is super geeky or hyper sexualized.  She is overly emotional or lacking empathy.  Though intended to be comedic, these damaging stereotypes of one-dimensional women are one of the reasons women are still significantly underrepresented in STEM fields.

Join us for a conversation about how the media represents of women of science.  We will explore various characters in these television shows and discuss how their portrayals can negatively impact women in STEM and young girls who may aspire to STEM careers.
