    Undergraduate Writing and Editorial Intern

     

    The Office of First Year Programs & Learning Communities (FYP&LC) is seeking an undergraduate intern for the 2014 spring semester to assist with the creation, editing, and electronic publication of an alumni newsletter.  Additional office publication opportunities would be available for a qualified, interested candidate. These potential projects include the monthly FYP&LC spring e-newsletter and the 2014-2015 FYE Instructor Manual.

    Job Description:

    The internship provides one UConn undergraduate student opportunities to perform editorial and journalistic duties under the supervision of the Assistant Director of First Year Programs & Learning Communities, Shawna Lesseur, and the Special Programs Coordinator, Maxine Lentz. The ideal candidate for this internship is an advanced undergraduate majoring in English, Public Relations, Journalism, Writing, or Communications. Prior relevant experience in writing, editing, and outreach is desirable, but not required.

    • Working with a team to develop fresh ideas for content and articles.
    • Setting up and conduct professional interviews.
    • Researching, writing, fact checking, revising and/or copy editing a variety of newsletter articles about students, faculty, alumni, and other people or events related to FYP&LC.
    • Laying out, copy editing, and proofreading the spring 2014 e-newsletter.
    • Collaborating with FYP&LC staff and UConn Alumni Association for electronic publication of the e-newsletter.

     

    Qualifications:

    • Strong interest in researching, writing, and editing.
    • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
    • Excellent proofreading skills and familiarity with using style guides.
    • Ability to meet deadlines.
    • Ability to work effectively on a team.
    • Familiarity with MS Word and Publisher.
    • Strong Internet research skills.
    • Preferred: Experience with desktop publishing.
    • Preferred: Experience with Web publishing.
    • Preferred: Familiarity with the Office of First Year Programs & Learning Communities.

     

    Hours:

    Approximately 3-9 hours per week, ideally during the hours of 8:30am-4:30pm on most days. The position lasts for the 2014 spring semester. Exact hours will be determined based on the student’s academic schedule and the number of credits they are seeking for the internship, if the student is enrolled in an internship course through an academic department.

     

    Compensation:

    This is an unpaid position. If you would like to receive course credit for the internship you must set this up with an appropriate academic department prior to the beginning of the semester and follow all relevant university internship policies. It is the responsibility of the student to establish their internship course, if they would like to receive course credit for the experience. However, it is not required for the position.
