  • 11/20 Dr. Price on School Menu and School Lunch Policy

Dr. Joseph Price, Brigham Young University

Seminar Title: “Using School Menu Data to Evaluate the Impact of School Lunch Policy”

Abstract: We describe a method we have developed that gathers school menus from the website of each school district in the US, uses computer vision to extract information on the items being served, and matches each item with its nutritional information. We highlight how this new large dataset can provide insight about the geographic variation in the nutritional quality of school meals and evaluate the impact of school lunch policies on what schools serve. We also describe how the tools we’ve developed can be used to create new datasets from semi-structured images including modern online data, government documents, books and historical images.
